ICRA 2017 International Conference on Religion and Acceptance Activism. Academia. Art. 7 – 11 September 2017 | Amsterdam, Netherlands
ICRA 2017 conference will facilitate a platform for scholars, activists and professionals across disciplines and social/geographical contexts who are for an open debate on religion/faith and sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
The focus of the conference will mainly be on queer Muslims, Islam, Muslim societies and diasporas, but is not limited to these topics. Perspectives on other religions and faith traditions, cultural and social contexts are welcome.
This conference is a follow up to Maruf’s first conference in November 2012. Since then the challenging discussion regarding the relationship between religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics is (even more) at the forefront of the international human rights debate. We want to connect, reflect and act.
Aims of the conference: - Identify challenges facing LGBTI persons of faith, faith leaders and faith communities and seek ways forward to raise awareness; - Strengthen international focus and collaboration on improving the position of LGBTI persons within faith communities; - Foster networking, debate and discussions across national borders and across academic and activist disciplines; - Develop networks in support of advocacy groups and faith communities with a view to future joint action.
Topics of interest could be (but are not limited to): - Religion/Faith and Sexuality, - Queer newcomers and migrations, - Intersectionality of identities and sexualities, - Global geopolitics of sexualities vs local practices and experiences, - Queer politics and transnational solidarity, - Homonationalism, (sexual) racism and (gendered) islamophobia, xenophobia.
Formats: We encourage contributions in a diverse range of formats. - traditional (academic) conference papers, - workshops, - open space discussions, - film screenings, installations and other contributions...
